Sales Tax Registration

When you operate an ecommerce business in the U.S., you must remember that each individual state is its own entity, and that you are required to collect sales tax and pay ecommerce use tax in the states in which you do business. The first step in this process is filing sales tax registration documents in these states. Each state’s sales tax registration process is different, and the economic nexus threshold can vary as well. That is why so many ecommerce businesses depend on SalesTaxSolutions.US for help with sales tax compliance services.

Economic Nexus Determination

While ecommerce businesses are responsible for completing sales tax registration in the states in which they do business, it is not always necessary. Each state has what is known as economic nexus, which is the threshold businesses must cross before they are required to pay taxes there.

In many states, that economic nexus threshold is $100,000. In others it’s more, and in some states, there is no sales tax. Some states also have a minimum number of transactions you must have in order to trigger economic nexus.

Nexus determination can be complicated and making a mistake can be costly. Depend on SalesTaxSolutions.US to assist you with nexus determination.

Sales Tax Registration Filing

Not only can the economic nexus threshold vary from state to state, but the ecommerce sales tax registration filing process varies as well. In most states, obtaining a sales tax permit is free, but some states charge a fee (in Connecticut, it’s $100).

Sales tax permits may be good indefinitely, or they may expire every one to five years, depending on the state. Some states require you to have a sales tax registration permit in hand for a certain period (for example, 30 days) before conducting business in that state.

Each state has its own list of required documents you must submit with your ecommerce sales tax registration. Examples include your tax ID number, business license number and bank account numbers. Each permit may be many pages long.

Many ecommerce businesses are relieved to turn the task of filing for sales tax registration over to SalesTaxSolutions.US. We have completed thousands of sales tax registrations on behalf of clients in all 50 states.

Sales Tax Compliance

Keep in mind that once you complete your ecommerce sales tax registration and receive your permit to do business in each state, it is your responsibility to collect the proper amount of sales tax online for each sale and to pay your ecommerce use tax on time to that state. Failure to do so can result in fines and penalties.

The team at SalesTaxSolutions.US can assist you with sales tax compliance. We can prepare sales tax reports that clearly indicate the number and dollar amount of sales made in each state, as well as that state’s tax rate and how much your ecommerce business owes. You need only pay the amount on the bottom line to achieve sales tax compliance.

Whether you need help collecting or paying Shopify sales tax or tax through another platform such as eBay or Etsy, rely on our sales tax company. For nexus help or assistance with ecommerce sales tax registration, reports or compliance, contact SalesTaxSolutions.US today.

1

Determine Nexus

We’ll skip this step if you already know where you need to register. However, we do recommend a nexus determination prior to registering sales tax accounts. We want to avoid registering states that a business may not need to register in. This saves them money and time in the long run.

2

Business Questionnaire

In order to move forward with registrations, we need to obtain information about your business. We use a convenient online form called a business questionnaire. On the questionnaire you will provide all the information we need to complete your business registrations. The online form is very simple to use, with just 6 steps, and can be saved if you need to go back to it later.

Register Accounts

After the business questionnaire is completed we’ll start registering your business in the states and jurisdictions you agreed to have registered in the first step. This process can take between 30-60 days. We provide weekly updates on the statuses of the registrations so you’re always in the loop.

4

Obtain Licenses and File!

Each state and jurisdiction provides a sales tax license to businesses after the registration has been accepted. Some states provide these online while others provide them via snail mail. For the sales tax certificates that can be obtained online, we gather those and provide them to you. The ones provided via mail will be mailed directly to your office. We assist with any issues or delays of receiving certificates.

Returns are due for registered accounts on the filing frequency assigned to the account. We will provide those details to you in the case that you will be filing your own sales tax returns. If you choose to have us file returns then we’ll move forward with that process immediately after registrations process.
